The Library is a department of the City and reports to the City Manager and a seven-member Board of Trustees appointed by the City Council. The Board of Trustees sets the policies by which the Library is administered.
The Library System consists of the main Weaver Library and the Riverside branch library, all offering the opportunity to connect to the world. Resources and services are provided to meet the educational, recreational and cultural needs of the entire community. Materials are available in various formats: print, electronic (books and audiobooks), CDs and DVDs. The Weaver Library also circulates 12 iPad Mini tablets preloaded with Kindle books.
Programs for all ages are scheduled through the year and an expanded technology area offers access to the Internet, computer instruction and various computer programs. A young adult area, children's room, information center and community services department combine to provide a vast array of programs and information for East Providence residents. Literacy and ESL classes are offered year-round by the Library's full-time Literacy Coordinator.
Open 64 hours a week, the Library circulates nearly 400,000 items and answers more than 70,000 reference questions annually. The staff consists of the Director, nine Professional Librarians, one Literacy Coordinator, one Technical Services Assistant, one Youth Services Assistant, one Circulation Coordinator, seven Library Aides, one Custodian, five part-time employees and one student assistant.
